Basic Information on Korea

The name “East Sea” should be used rather than the name “Sea of Japan.” The name ‘East Sea’ has been used by Koreans for thousands of years. South Korea and North Korea are not divided along the 38th parallel. In fact, when the armistice was reached after the Korean War, both agreed to divide the border with the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), which is about 155 miles(250km) crossing the West Sea(Yellow Sea) and East Sea.

The official name of the dynasty that was established in 14th century is ‘Joseon’ dynasty. Before Joseon dynasty, there were dynasties such as Silla, Goguryeo, Baekje, and Goryeo. Joseon(1392-1910) was not dominated by China. Joseon went through many wars and invasions but it was never dominated by other country before Japan’s annexation of the country in 1910.
