Was ‘Korea’ a vassal state of ‘Manchu’?

• Back in 1644-1760, Joseon dynasty was located in the Korean peninsula. Notating Joseon dynasty(1392-1910) as ‘Korea’ is an awkward notation since other countries or dynasties in other countries were called with the name that were used in the same time period (e.g. Ming and Qing are not just notated only as ‘China’, both are usually written as ‘Ming China’ or ‘Qing China’.

• Also, Joseon was not a vassal state of Ming nor Qing(Manchu). According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of a ‘vassal state ‘ is as follows: a state with varying degrees of independence in its internal affairs but dominated by another state in its foreign affairs and potentially wholly subject to the dominating state. The term  ‘vassal state’ is developed from a European view as it means a status similar to that of a vassal in the feudal system in medieval Europe. Therefore, the term ‘vassal state’ cannot and does not prescribe the relation between Joseon and Ming or Qing(Manchu).  Rather, Joseon was in a tributary relation with Ming and Qing.  Joseon paid tribute to Ming and Qing. Despite tributary relations with Ming and Qing, Joseon was completely free from political interference from both countries.

• The term ‘East Sea’ should be used rather than ‘Sea of Japan’. The term ‘Sea of Japan’, which the Japanese government claims, is a remainder from Japanese Imperialism. ‘East Sea’ has been a part of Koreans’ lives historically.

• 1644-1760년 사이에 한반도에는 조선 왕조가 있었습니다. 조선 왕조(1392-1910)를 ‘Korea’ 라고 표기하는 것은 어색합니다. 예를 들어 명나라와 청나라는 ‘China’라고만 표기되지 않고, 주로 ‘Ming China’ 혹은 ‘Qing China’라고 표기되는 것 같이, 이 나라들 혹은 왕조들처럼 한국 역사 속의 왕조도 그 당시의 국명으로 표기되어야 할 것입니다.

• 또한 조선은 명나라 혹은 청나라의 속국이 아니었습니다. Merriam-Webster 사전에 의하면 ‘속국’은 “내정에서는 다양한 정도의 독립성을 갖지만 외교에서는 다른 국가에 의해 지배되고 잠재적으로 완전히 지배적인 국가에 종속되는 국가”입니다. ‘vassal state(속국)’라는 용어는 중세 유럽 봉건 제도의 봉신과 유사한 지위를 의미하므로 유럽의 관점에서 발전한 용어입니다. 따라서 조선과 명 혹은 조선과 청의 관계는 ‘vassal state(속국)’ 관계로 정의할 수 없습니다. 오히려 조선은 명나라, 청나라와 조공 관계를 맺었습니다. 조선은 명과 청에 조공을 바쳤습니다. 두 나라와 조공 관계에 있었음에도 불구하고 조선은 정치적 간섭에서 완전히 자유로웠습니다.

• ‘일본해’ 대신에 ‘동해’라는 표현이 사용되어야 합니다. 일본 정부가 주장하는 ‘일본해’ 표기는 일본 제국주의의 잔재입니다. ‘동해’는 역사적으로 줄곧 한국인들의 삶의 일부분이었습니다.

• First, the term ‘Korea’ should be changed into ‘Joseon’ or ‘Joseon Korea’.

• Second, ‘Manchu vassal state’ on the legend of the map should be changed into ‘Qing(Manchu) tributary state’.  Also, the white parts of the map should be clearly marked.

• Third, the term ‘Sea of Japan’ between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago should be changed into ‘East Sea’.
