When was Korea liberated? | When did Korea regain independence?

CIA World Factbook seems to use both ‘liberation’ and ‘independence’ as a synonym. Korea was “liberated” from Japan when Japan surrendered in 1945, and reached “independence” when the U.S. Military government ended in 1948. The US military government lasted three years from liberation in 1945 until the establishment of an independent South Korean government in 1948.

It is a common mistake in the English language to acknowledge and use both words “independence” and “liberation” as the same meaning. However, in fact, both words have different meanings. “Liberation” only means the nation’s escape from foreign rule and does not mean the formation of a sovereign state, whereas “independence” means not only the liberation of the nation, but also the formation of a sovereign state. The use of “liberation” and “independence” as synonyms in the CIA World Factbook without discriminating between them may cause misunderstandings for foreigners who want to understand Korean history properly.

CIA World Factbook은 해방(liberation)과 독립(independence)를 분간하지 않고 동의어로 사용하는 것으로 보입니다. 한국은 1945년 일본이 항복하면서 일본으로부터 해방(liberated)되었고, 1948년 미군정이 끝나면서 독립(independence)을 맞이했습니다. (미)군정은 1945년 해방부터 1948년 남한단독정부가 수립되기 전까지 3년간 지속되었습니다. 

영어에서 “independence(독립)”과 “liberation(해방)”을 동일한 의미로 인식하고 사용하는 것은 종종 발생하는 실수라고 생각합니다. 하지만 실제로 두 단어는 다른 의미를 가지고 있습니다. “Liberation(해방)”은 오직 민족이 외세의 지배로부터 벗어난 것만을 뜻하고, 주권 국가의 형성까지를 뜻하지는 않습니다. 반면에 “independence(독립)”은 민족이 해방된 데 더해 주권 국가의 형성까지를 뜻합니다. CIA 월드팩트북에서 “liberation(해방)”과 “independence(독립)”을 서로 분간하지 않고 동의어로 사용하는 것은 한국 역사를 제대로 이해하고자 하는 외국인들에게 착오를 불러일으킬 수 있습니다.
