Where did the letter ‘han’ in ‘Daehanminguk’ come from?

Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla from the Three Kingdoms Era are not usually called the “Three Han Kingdoms”. Before the rise of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla of the Three Kingdoms Era, there were “Three Han States, or the “Three Hans” in Korean peninsula which were named “Mahan”, “Jinhan”, and “Byeonhan”. The Three Hans did not develop into Kingdoms so they are not called as Mahan kingdom, Jinhan kingdom, and Byeonhan kingdom. The ‘Han’ of ‘Daehanminguk’ is usually known to come from the name of these three Hans. Therefore, the term “Three Han Kingdoms” is also incorrect. However, some records state that the Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla people regarded themselves as ‘Hans’. So the description is not entirely incorrect.

삼국 시대의 고구려, 백제, 신라는 주로 “세 한 왕국”으로 불리지 않습니다. 삼국 시대의 고구려와 백제, 신라가 형성되기 이전에 “세 부족사회” 혹은 “삼한”이 한반도에 있었으며, 그 이름들은 “마한”, “진한”, “변한” 입니다. 삼한은 왕국으로 발전하지 못했기 때문에 마한 왕국, 진한 왕국, 변한 왕국으로 불리지 않았습니다. ‘대한민국’의 ‘한’은 이 ‘세 한’ 나라들에서 온 것으로 주로 알려져 있습니다. 따라서 “세 한 왕국”이라는 표현 또한 잘못되었습니다. 하지만 일부 문헌 기록에 의하면 고구려, 백제, 신라 사람들이 자신들을 ‘한’나라 사람이라고 칭하기도 했다고 합니다. 따라서 해당 서술이 완전히 틀린 것은 아닙니다.
